What is a PS4 Remote Play?
As the name suggests, PS4 Remote Play or PS4 Remote Play is a way to remotely stream games from your PlayStation 4 to another device. The application has long been available for Windows, Mac and Android, but only at the beginning of March 2019 it appeared on iOS. In this case, the mechanism for installing and configuring Remote Play is almost the same for all OSs.
How to install remote play?
First of all, you need to download the application.
It is compatible with both iPhone and iPad. In addition, you need to make sure that your gadgets and PS4 are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Before you start configuring Remote Play, you need to make sure that the latest updated version of the software is installed on the console – 6.50. Then you need to check if the PlayStation 4 Remote Play is turned on. To do this, go to the settings menu.
There, scroll down to the item “Configure Remote Play Connection”.
Opposite the item "Allow remote playback" should be ticked.
Do not rush to leave this menu, as it is still needed. Next, launch the PS4 Remote Play on your iPhone or iPad. After starting the application, the “Start” button will be displayed on the screen. By clicking on it you will need to enter your Sony account credentials.
After that, the application will immediately begin searching for your console. This may take some time.
If the application cannot find the console, return to the “Remote Play Connection Setup” menu, select “Add Device”. A code will appear.
Then return to your gadget and click "Register manually" and enter the code that is displayed on your console.
That’s all you need to do to install Remote Play. This procedure is carried out only once, and after that you can launch PS4 games on iPhone anytime, anywhere, even if you are away from home.
How to set up PS4 Remote Play?
But don’t rush to start playing PS4 games on your iPhone right away. Before you plunge into the world of console games on a smartphone, you need to spend a little more time to configure the application.
On the main screen of Remote Play, click on the gear icon, which is located in the upper right corner.
There you need to find the item "Video Quality for Remote Play", it depends on how good the games will look and how bad they will work.
By default, the video quality for remote playback is set to 540p. This is quite enough for the iPhone, but for the iPad screen this will not be enough. But, it’s also worth mentioning here that the 1080p option is only available for the PS4 Pro. Regular PS4s are limited to 720p.
Further you can adjust the frame rate. Of course, the higher this indicator, the better the picture on the screen will look.
But, do not forget that this can also affect performance. In addition, if you set a high frequency in the settings, at a low Internet speed, the image will begin to slow down, like the game itself. Because sometimes it’s better to install
standard parameters set by default.
Touch control PS4 Remote Play iOS instead of DualShock 4
The main advantage of Remote Play on Android, Windows or Mac is the ability to use DualShock 4 for PS4 with these devices. With iOS, this is not possible, and this is one of the main reasons why Sony has not released the PS4 Remote Play on iOS for so long. The solution that Sony eventually proposed was touch control for the PS4 Remote Play iOS.
As a rule, the touch control in action games is quite terrible, especially when these games were developed taking into account game controllers. Therefore, it is not surprising that nothing came of the PS4 Remote Play on the iPhone.
Playing games like God of War or Red Dead Redemption 2, with a complex control scheme, is terrible on iOS. The touch control buttons are located just like on the joystick.
As a result, it is unplayable on a flat screen, they are completely ergonomic, located incredibly inconvenient, especially for the L1 / LR and R1 / R2 buttons. Usually the player uses the index and middle fingers to click on them. However, with touch control they are almost impossible to press in combination with others. If on the iPhone the touch control of the Remote Play is inconvenient, then in the case of the iPad everything is worse.
But, there is a solution. And this – third party controller. Since you cannot use DualShock 4, you should use its alternative. For example, the joystick SteelSeries Nimbus. Despite the fact that compared to DualShock 4, the Nimbus joystick has other buttons and there is no Share and PS. It’s easier to get used to than the touch control of the PS4 Remote Play iOS.
