3D artist turned Minecraft into strategy and got a job
3D artist Brendan Sullivan decided to get a job at the Swedish studio Mojang, best known for developing the cult game Minecraft.
As a test assignment, he was asked to "rethink Minecraft’s look / style for a hypothetical new game." Sullivan not only presented several concepts, but approached the issue much more extensively. He developed a true prototype of the game, which he called Minecraft Tactics.
In an imaginary toy, Minecraft turns into a real-time strategy (RTS), where the elements of the game blend perfectly with the usual Minecraft style. According to Sullivan, the concept of the strategy is perfect for Minecraft, where players get resources most of the time.
Needless to say, the prototype impressed Mojang and Sullivan got the position of 3D artist.
